As the mother grows older, the daughter matures. The bond between mother and daughter resembles that of sisters, mutually dependent and accompanying each other. While there may be real disputes and quarrels, their companionship blossoms into the warmest of emotions. This attachment and repeated interaction correspond to Emmanuel Levinas's ethical thinking about the "Other" — in the presence of the Other, we bear responsibility; in intimacy, we learn what it means to care and to act ethically.
