Intro
“Zengwen Mountain Ridge” was created in 1978 and depicts the rugged mountain landscape around the Zengwen Reservoir in Chiayi County. This oil‐based relief print on cardboard features vast expanses of green hills, their slopes divided by branching, vein-like lines that reveal the earth’s texture. The central brown area represents a landslide stripped by heavy rains, exposing fresh soil, while the foreground delicately renders the Zengwen Reservoir dam and nearby village buildings, suggesting the interdependence of humanity and nature. As one scholar observes, “Through bold geometric divisions, Chiu Chung-Chun captures both the land’s tactile memory and its historical resonance, offering a profound printmaking response to the contemporary landscape.”
